Why check a filer code?

The filer code tells you which company actually filed your customs entry. It's a quick way to confirm that the broker you hired is the one handling your goods — and that it holds a current CBP permit. If the code isn't a permitted broker, ask questions before you pay duties or fees.

Frequently asked questions

What is a CBP filer code?

A unique three-character code (letters and digits) that U.S. Customs and Border Protection assigns to each customs broker and to importers that file their own entries. It is the first part of every entry number.

How do I find the filer code on my entry?

Your entry number looks like ABC-1234567-8. The first three characters (ABC) are the filer code of whoever filed the entry — usually your customs broker.

The code belongs to a company but it isn’t marked as a permitted broker. Why?

CBP also gives filer codes to self-filing importers and to brokers who no longer hold a permit. Only codes on CBP’s current permitted broker list are marked as licensed customs brokers here.
